My New Toy

I bought myself a new camera. It's just a small digital but I totally love it only I'm not sure about the picture quality just yet so I'm going to post some pictures and see if I love it or hate it.

I saw this camera advertised on TV and since we're going to the mountains in another week, I knew I had to buy one to replace my old one that bit the dust. This one is called a Nikon Coolpix 6400. What I liked about it is that it has 7x zoom where my old one only had 5. And the TV advertisement just SOLD it, but if it doesn't measure up, I was conned by advertising.

My son came over and had dinner with us on the deck, then we decided to catch some sunset pictures on the dock. The thing is the sunset wasn't cooperating. It had been a wonderful sunny and warm day and I just knew we'd have a good sunset, but nooooo.

Anyway, the first picture is my son putting the camera together. Dishes are still on our "table" I think, so ignore the mess. And he needs a hair cut something fierce. The next few pictures are my lame attempt at getting sunset pictures and there's one of my son on the boat fixing something and my daughter is standing on the dock with Skylar, one of our pooches. Now let's see if this thing is better than my old one:

Okay, the verdict is out...crappy or not?

  2. The pictures look nice. I love your sunset, your sun sets over the water and my sun goes down behind the mountains unless of course, when I'm at the beach. Still like your view better.

  3. I think they look good. Next time try experimenting with the camera on manual exposure. Take a picture, look at the result, then change it for another. Auto exposure doesn't always do well with strong backlighting, which sunsets are. You might also play a bit with some of the other auto settings. Is there one for backlit subjects? You don't just want it to fire the flash for fill.

One of the great things about digital cameras is that you can do a lot of experimenting. It doesn't cost anything to do. If you don't like the results, just delete them after you look at it on the screen. You might also want to get some sort of a computer program that will allow you to do computer adjusting of the image after you've taken it. I like and use Photoshop Elements which costs about $80 from Costco. It will also give you a way of organizing them into an album like thing (called Organizer) that is real handy, especially if you start tagging them. The program is two parts- the Organizer and the Editor.

  4. Wow, thank you Dick! I've got the manual but still haven't looked through it thoroughly. I still need to find the zoom which I'm sure is there. I'll work with it some more before we go to the mountains next week. Thanks, hon...and I'll be stopping by!

  5. The pics are nice. You will just have to play with it to learn how to get the right effects. I want so much to take a photography class and learn how to take decent pictures and adjust the size, pics etc. My last pic took so long to load I know it was way too big, but I don't know how to make it smaller. And it may be these pics that are putting your sidebar to the bottom of your post.
