Larry Pratt's a star on American Idol

Who watched American Idol last week?

American Idol is my most favoritest show of all time. Call me shallow but it is!

I watched the first show of the season last Tuesday and again Wednesday night and by far, Atlanta had the most talented. But it was the very very last contestant that floored everyone. It wasn't so much his singing voice, but well...you be the judge...

Michael Johns Goes Home...

Did anyone see who got eliminated from American Idol last week? Michael Johns??? Have they flipped??? I was over to Lisa Jackson's blog a few minutes ago and even she was talking about it even though she tries to keep her blog book-oriented, but this is something you just can't hold back.

That guy had star potential. And I'm pissed.

But, you know, did you see him lean over to Randy, Paula and Simon and they were whispering something into his ear? Do you think...yeah, I'm hoping that, too. My daughter says that Randy has connections and I'm sure Paula does and I think Simon does, too. So, there you go.

But, still. Look, here's the way it was shaping up for me...

When the first week started, David Archuleta just blew my socks off. I kept with him for a couple weeks, then there was something about Jason Castro that really touched me. No, he's not the best vocally I think and I do believe that's because he's so soft-spoken when he sings, but he is really a truly truly charismatic and gifted singer. But, hell, they're all great and I do believe, and it's been quoted by other people, that this year had the most talented performers I've seen since I started watching the show religiously three years ago.

But in the last couple of weeks, Michael Johns...there was just something about him. He had the look, he had a fantastic voice and he had great stage presence. I know he could go far. And I believe he will.
So, looks like my favorite right now is Jason Castro. Last week, he sang a wonderful rendition of Over the Rainbow...

Now, you tell me...is this an American Idol, or what?

American Idol Obsession

Well, it was great...fantastic...stupendous! Tonight Blake Edwards and Jordin Sparks duked it out and I have to say it's going to be close. Super close.

But, don't tell that to my daughter who is still in the bedroom voting and voting and voting for Blake Lewis. Guess we won't know until tomorrow night.

But...

Tomorrow night, she and I are going to pah-ty with dip and chips and popcorn and we're going to camp out in her bedroom to watch the finale, and pray, pray, pray that those million and a half times she voted for him, Blake will come out the winner.

It's all her fault she hooked me on Blake because Jordin has been my favorite since the last few weeks. She is one of the most fantastic singers I've heard in a long time. But, Blake has pizzazz with his little beat boxing thing he has going on and he's such a little cutey-pie.

We ordered tickets last Saturday and she and I are going to the American Idol Live concert at the Hampton Coliseum in September. I. Cannot. Wait.

I get to see Sanjaya! And Phil! And all the others who kept me glued to the tube when I should have been on here setting up tour dates for my authors.

It's been fun, but my daughter brought up something interesting. What are we going to look forward to now that American Idol is just about over???

I have no idea.

Every Tuesday and Wednesday night, there's going to be a void! I need my American Idol fix!

Ah well. Guess I'll have to find something else to keep me entertained.

Well, my million and a half votes are going to Blake, so we shall see tomorrow night...PAAAAHHHH-TY!!!

Would you like to join us?

Anyway, I thought you might like to see Blake's first Seattle audition. That hair's gotta go!

American Idol Barbie

Has anyone seen this? Isn't that the cutest thing? If my kids were younger, I'd fall right into the commercialism trap!

Anyway, how depressing. Sanjaya is gone. I know he should have been gone months ago, voice-wise, but I felt such a connection with that kid. I couldn't bear to watch him up on stage with tears streaming down his face...it broke my heart.

But you know, I told my daughter that his last performance sucked and that's the first time I've ever said that. He was on stage singing like it didn't matter and you just can't do that, you know? If you listen real good (he has such a soft voice), he really does have a good voice. Maybe it's his age. Wonder if he'll go back next year?

I can see it now...Simon will go "ohhhh noooooo."

Ah well.

So, that leaves a bunch of good singers left. I was surprised to see Blake in the bottom three. He's not my favorite, but I thought he had a pretty good following. He flunked country music big time, but then, no one rocked the house as much as Phil. That guy is a natural at country music. I'm kinda thinking it was his last performance that kept him out of the bottom three. Jordin is my favorite...she could make it but I thought Sanjaya would last longer, so I'm not being a very good judge this year. Actually, I thought Lakesha was going to get the boot, but nooooo. Chris Richardson, our local contestant sort of, made it in the top 3...surprised the heck out of me because I really didn't think he had a good performance the night before. And Melinda..man...that girl is awesome. I'd be curious to see how far she gets.

So now we have to wait until week. What'll I watch when this is over???

I'm not a big TV fan only because I don't have a TV out here by the computer. Well, I do, but it's not picking up the satellite receiver. Worked when they left, then I had to go and try to work the remote one day. Big mistake. Screwed the whole thing up.

I'm not very technically-oriented.

But, it's okay because I have tons of work to do. I'm tying up the tours for the three wonderful authors I have going out next month - Sandi Shelton, Caridad Pineiro and Pamela Thibodeaux. If you'd like to see their tour pages, go to www.virtualbooktoursforauthors.blogspot.com and look in the right hand sidebar.

I'm also working with Heide to see what kind of promo we want to do for The Search for the Million $$$ Ghost. I'm aiming for online, she offline, but we'll both be doing a little of each. Jamieson Wolf gave us an excellent review yesterday at www.thebookpedler.wordpress.com.

Sanjaya Malakar is Holding on Strong

What a show! If anyone out there are American Idol fanatics like me, you gotta admit Sanjaya is really holding on strong. I was trying to guess who they'd cut and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out just who. None of them really did that well, but singing Latino songs has to be pretty hard if you're not Latino.

Actually, I thought Sanjaya did pretty well Tuesday night. I'm not surprised that Haley was cut, though. I think she was rather miffed about what Simon said about her lack of clothes and lack of singing voice. Ouch. Chris Richardson, although he's from my home state, really isn't doing it for me. Blake is my daughter's favorite and you gotta admit he's got a pretty good chance.

All in all, I wonder who is going to be the final winner?

The way I'm seeing it, it's going to be a toss-up between Blake Lewis, Sanjaya and Jordin Sparks. I'm thinking they are going to be the final three, too.

I can't wait until next week!

Why We Love Sanjaya

Okay, here's the deal, dog. Sanjaya is hot. If Howard Stern, shock jock who thrives on being different, endorses him, how can you think otherwise?

After yesterday's blog post, I did some digging. All along I have rooted for our little underdog and as it turns out, I was right on the money.

According to AOL Television, here are the reasons why we love Sanjaya:

1. Not since season three's Jon Stevens has a country been so riveted by a marginally talented teenager (marginally talented...hmmm...can you get your hair up in a seven-ponytailed mohawk?)

2. He beat Sundance (gotta give him three thumbs up for that one).

3. Because his fans have the craziest names (gotta love Fan-jayas!).

4. Because he's already been immortalized on Saturday Night Live (this was one of the funniest videos I've seen on YouTube).

5. Because he had nerve enough to hoola dance on television (Nerve? Anyone who would do that doesn't care a doodiddly what others think!)

6. He leaves Simon speechless (priceless!)

7. Because he sucks and he doesn't care (the best thing about this is that I feel he truly knows he doesn't suck and doesn't care that the rest of the world think otherwise).

8. He makes little girls cry (instant teenie-bopper superstardom there!)

9. Howard Stern is a fan (need I say more?)

10. His hair (I gotta admit the mohawk thing was a bit wild and probably scared off those crying teenie-boppers, but what do I know?)

I'm curious to see how far Sanjaya gets. I'd be pretty darn surprised if he doesn't become the next American Idol, despite all the naysayers, for the simple reason that he's already become a household name. I don't think the rest can top that. My next contenders would be either Blake or Haley. The rest have great singing voices (don't they all?) but I'm thinking who would be the most likely one to sell albums for these record companies and that's what it's all about, doc.

Here's a video of his first audition!

Will Sanjaya Malakar be the Next American Idol?

You know, I find it either very weird or very interesting that American Idol is the only show I watch. I barely have time for TV, but American Idol is the only show that I will stop what I'm doing and race in the bedroom to watch. And it's all because of a seventeen-year-old teen called Sanjaya Malakar (sorry, I couldn't get the image thingee to load tonight).

Oh, well, that's the reason this year, anyway. I watch it every year, but this year is different. We have an underdog who doesn't sing as well as the others, yet he's really holding his own. But, it wasn't until I saw the little girl crying in the audience did I realize what Sanjaya has. He's got teenie-bopper sex appeal...adorable little guy who I truly believe has the potential to become America's next American Idol. But wait...don't hiss at me yet, let me explain...

When I was a teenie-bopper back many moons ago, I had a crush on Davey Jones, one of the singers from the sixties sensation, The Monkees. Then, when the Partridge Family aired on T.V., it was David Cassidy. If you'll take a real good look at both of these teen idols, what do they have in common? Teenie-bopper sex appeal. It didn't matter how they sang, as long as they sang.

Both these teen idols were never as good as other performers of their generation, but they reached superstardom, selling platinum and gold albums and had every teenie bopper (like me) fainting at their feet.

This is what's happening with Sanjaya, and this is why I feel that he could really win American Idol hands down.

You have to look at the music business as it really is. The music moguls want performers who can sell albums. It's not enough to know how to sing, you have to know how to perform and do that with such power and energy that everyone talks about it. And they are talking about it. Sanjaya even has his own fan website simply called SanjayaFans.com. People are definitely talking about it.

It doesn't matter what Simon, Randy or Paula says at this point. Sanjaya already has legions of fans which to me is pretty unusual so early in the game. Diana Ross sums it up: "Sanjaya is love," and I believe that he's going to do pretty darn good. Mark my words. Even if he doesn't win the competition, this boy is going to go far.

I'll tell you one thing. He reminds me of Michael Jackson a little. Anyone notice that?

It's American Idol, Baby!

I sure wish I had been blogging throughout this whole competition, but I got a little promo sidetracked. For the record, and this is so sad, American Idol is my most favorite show. A lot of people would feel this is a shallow thing to say being as it's not very literature-related, nor is it something that requires thinking to watch, but then maybe that's the fascination in it all.

Maybe I like to kick back once in awhile and take in Americana at its best and what better way to do it than to replay what's happened in this season's American Idol.

For your viewing pleasure, here's one video from the show that's one of the most watched show in America at this time. Now, this guy...he's a strange dude. I picked that one up the moment he walked in the door...and in Simon's famous words...."What...was...THAT?" I love Simon...absolutely love him...anywhere, here's the video...
